Texas Co-ops Uphold Youth Tour Legacy
June 21, 2013
One hundred thirteen high school students from 50 Texas cooperatives visited the nation's capital on the state's 48th annual Government-in-Action Youth Tour, a weeklong trip to see monuments, museums, and landmarks, and meet their legislators and staff.
Youth Tour began about 50 years ago to expose rural youths to history, government and city life. The Texas delegates joined about 1,600 of their peers from 640 electric co-ops across the nation.
On Rural Youth Day, Youth Tour participant Madeline Peña of Wise EC was elected by her fellow students and chaperones to represent Texas on the Youth Leadership Council. As a YLC delegate, Peña will participate in a leadership conference in Washington, D.C., and attend the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association's 2014 annual meeting.
